MITCHELL KERNELS
— Mitchell Kernels boys tennis team picked up a pair of wins Friday in a home triangular at Hitchcock Park. The Kernels defeated Aberdeen Central 8-1, then topped Sioux Falls Washington 6-3 to improve to 10-3 on the season. Mitchell will host Vermillion, Pierre and Yankton on Monday at 10:30 am at Hitchcock Park.

— Harrisburg softball powered past Mitchell on Friday, defeating the Kernels 14-4 in six innings. The Tigers jumped out early with a six-run second inning and a six-run sixth to extend their winning streak to nine games.. Mitchell fell to 1-7 on the season and returns to action Monday at home against Watertown at 5:30 pm.

— Mitchell Kernels girls golf competes on Monday at the Sioux Falls Washington Invitational at Willow Run Golf Course at 10 am.

— Mitchell baseball hosts Sioux Falls Roosevelt on Tuesday for a 5 pm doubleheader at Drake Field.

DAKOTA WESLEYAN
— Dakota Wesleyan track and field saw four athletes earn All-Conference honors at the GPAC Outdoor Championships in Fremont, Nebraska. On the men’s side, Quenton Walls led the way with a runner-up finish in the triple jump, while Maxwell Raab took sixth in the javelin and freshman Talan Heezen tied for eighth in the pole vault. For the women, Dani Deffenbaugh stood out with All-Conference honors in two events, highlighted by an eighth-place finish in the heptathlon.

— Dakota Wesleyan’s baseball season came to an end on Friday as the sixth-seeded Tigers fell to second-seeded Concordia 14-5. DWU finishes the season 21-28, its best record since 2019. Concordia advances to the GPAC championship game vs. Doane on Monday in Crete, Nebraska.

SOUTH DAKOTA STATE
— Luke Luskey hit two home runs, including a grand slam, and drove in seven runs Sunday to lead South Dakota State to a 16-10 victory over North Dakota State. Luskey’s performance moved him into the top 10 on South Dakota State’s career home runs list. The Jackrabbits clinched the series with the win as SDSU scored three runs in the first inning and broke the game open when Luskey launched a two-run homer in the third and a grand slam in the fourth, helping SDSU build a 9-1 lead. The Jackrabbits return home this weekend to host St. Thomas in their final home series of the season.

— North Dakota State Bison softball erupted for 13 runs in the first inning and cruised past South Dakota State 15-2 in five innings on Saturday to close the regular season. The teams will meet again in the opening round of the Summit League tournament on Wednesday in Minneapolis, with NDSU as the No. 3 seed and SDSU as the No. 6 seed.

— South Dakota State sits in contention after the opening round of the Summit League Men’s Golf Championship, finishing tied for fifth at 5-over-par 289. The Jackrabbits are five shots behind leader USD, which opened at even-par 284. SDSU’s Jake Olson, Jacob Wilson and Drew Teeter each shot 72 and are tied for 12th place. The second round begins Monday morning in Mesa, Arizona.

SOUTH DAKOTA
— Omaha softball used a fast start to defeat USD 13-4 on Saturday in the regular-season finale. The Mavericks scored four runs in the first inning and never trailed, extending the lead to 6-0 before the Coyotes answered with four runs in the fourth to pull within two. The Mavericks responded immediately, scoring three runs in the fifth and adding four more over the final two innings. USD, the No. 4 seed, will face No. 5 seed Kansas City in the opening round of the Summit League tournament Wednesday in Minneapolis.

HOWARD WOOD DAKOTA RELAYS
— At the Dakota Relays on Saturday, Mitchell seniors Alexier Padilla and Audrey Miller each recorded fifth-place finishes to lead area performers. Padilla clocked a season-best 50.01 seconds to place fifth in the boys 400-meter dash, earning his first career individual podium finish at the meet. He also ran the opening leg for Mitchell’s 1,600-meter relay team, which placed third in 3 minutes, 24.06 seconds. Miller delivered a personal-best mark of 36 feet, 5 1/2 inches on her final attempt to take fifth in the girls triple jump. Elsewhere, Freeman’s Rylee Peters placed sixth in the girls 100 hurdles in 15.51 seconds after a personal-best run in the semifinals. Wessington Springs’ Kenzie Kolousek finished sixth in the girls 400 in 58.81 seconds.

MINNESOTA TWINS
— Andrew Morris pitched 3 2/3 scoreless innings in relief of starter Joe Ryan, who exited with elbow soreness after just nine pitches as the Minnesota Twins held on to beat the Toronto Blue Jays 4-3 to split a four-game series. Luke Keaschall had a pair of hits, including an RBI double in a three-run fifth inning. Minnesota starts at three game series at Washington on Tuesday.

NBA
— Cade Cunningham had 32 points and 12 assists, while Tobias Harris added 30 points as the Detroit Pistons beat the Orlando Magic 116-94 in Game 7 on Sunday to win a playoff series for the first time in 18 years. Cunningham averaged 32 points for Detroit, which last won a postseason series by beating Orlando in the second round in 2008. The Pistons became the 15th team in NBA history to overcome a 3-1 deficit and the second in the last two nights, after the Philadelphia 76ers came back to eliminate Boston on Saturday.

— Jarrett Allen tied his playoff career high with 22 points and grabbed 19 rebounds as the Cleveland Cavaliers advanced to the Eastern Conference semifinals with a 114-102 victory over the Toronto Raptors in Game 7 of their series Sunday night. Donovan Mitchell added 22 points and James Harden had 18 in a series in which the home team won all seven games. Cleveland, the No. 4 seed, will visit top-seeded Detroit on Tuesday night in Game 1 of the second round.

— Anthony Edwards might be back for Game 1 of the Minnesota Timberwolves’ playoff series against the San Antonio Spurs, barely a week after appearing to suffer a serious knee injury. Edwards will be listed as questionable for Monday night’s series opener. The All-Star guard, who averaged 36 points in three games against San Antonio this season, has been “cleared for on-court basketball activities.” Edwards was hurt in Game 4 of Minnesota’s first-round series against Denver and diagnosed with a left knee hyperextension and bone bruise.

NASCAR
— Chase Elliott stayed ahead of Denny Hamlin for the closing four laps after a final restart to win at Texas on Sunday, his second victory of the season and the 23rd of his career. Elliott led five times for a race-high 87 laps and joined five-time winner Tyler Reddick as the only NASCAR Cup drivers this season with multiple wins. Reddick finished fourth.

KENTUCKY DERBY
— Golden Tempo surged from the back of the pack to win the Kentucky Derby on Saturday, giving trainer Cherie DeVaux a historic first as the race’s first female-winning trainer. Golden Tempo charged past the field down the stretch to finish the 1 1/4-mile race in 2:02.27 at 23-1 odds. Attention now turns to the Preakness Stakes on May 16, with DeVaux saying a decision on Golden Tempo’s participation will be made in the coming days.

— Michael Busch hit a three-run triple and a sacrifice fly as the Chicago Cubs beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 8-4 for their fifth straight win. At 22-12, the Cubs are a season-high 10 games over .500. They have won 11 straight home games for the first time since 2008.

— Vinnie Pasquantino scored the go-ahead run in a three-run fourth inning as the Kansas City Royals held the Seattle Mariners to just four hits for a 4-1 win. Kris Bubic pitched seven innings, allowing four hits, one earned run and striking out seven to finish off a three-game sweep.

— Jasson Domínguez hit a two-run homer and an RBI single in a seven-run eighth inning as the New York Yankees routed the Baltimore Orioles 11-3 for their 13th win in 15 games. Aaron Judge hit his 13th homer to tie Munetaka Murakami for the major league lead.

— Justin Wrobleski tossed six scoreless innings to help the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the St. Louis Cardinals 4-1 to snap a four-game losing streak.

— Mark Vientos hit two homers and drove in four runs, while Clay Holmes allowed one run in 6 2/3 innings as the New York Mets beat the Los Angeles Angels 5-1. L.A. ended a season-high seven-game losing streak on Saturday. The Angels are 2-12 since April 18.

— Spencer Torkelson hit a two-run homer as the Detroit Tigers pulled away to a 7-1 victory over the Texas Rangers. Torkelson had gone five games without a homer after tying a franchise record by homering in five consecutive games.

— Jonathan Aranda hit a game-ending single in the 10th inning to cap a 4-for-5 afternoon as the Tampa Bay Rays beat the San Francisco Giants 2-1 to complete a three-game sweep.

— Oneil Cruz hit a tie-breaking single in the bottom of the eighth inning as the Pittsburgh Pirates completed a sweep of Cincinnati with a 1-0 win.

— Jonah Heim homered, doubled and drove in five runs as the Atlanta Braves beat the Colorado Rockies 11-6.

— Cam Smith hit a two-out, two-run single off the Green Monster in the 10th inning as the Houston Astros beat the Boston Red Sox 3-1. Boston went 0 for 11 with runners on, stranding 13.

— Bryson Stott hit a three-run homer to cap a six-run first inning as Philadelphia Phillies beat the Miami Marlins 7-2.

— Colby Thomas, Zack Gelof and Tyler Soderstrom homered as the Athletics beat the Cleveland Guardian 7-1 to avoid a series sweep.

— Xander Bogaerts hit a go-ahead single in the eighth, while Miguel Andujar and Manny Machado homered as the San Diego Padres beat the Chicago White Sox 4-3 to snap a four-game losing streak.

— Nasim Nuñez had a pair of run-scoring singles, while CJ Abrams had two hits and scored twice as the Washington Nationals beat the Milwaukee Brewers 3-2 to avoid a three-game sweep.
