No. 9 Dakota Wesleyan Stays Hot with Win over College of Saint Mary

OMAHA, Neb. — No. 9 Dakota Wesleyan Women’s Basketball headed to Nebraska to square off against the College of Saint Mary in a conference matchup.

The Tigers jumped out to an early 13-2 lead, which helped set the tone and pace for the remainder of the contest. Rylee Rosenquist was at the forefront of the scoring effort for DWU, posting 19 total points on 9-14 (64.3%) shooting from the field while grabbing five rebounds and a steal. She was joined by Avery Broughton, who had a monster nine-point first quarter, and went on to tally 15 total points on a 7-10 (70%) clip while also leading the Tigers in assists, with five in total. She also tied with Shalayne Nagel for the most steals on the team, as they recorded four apiece, with Nagel going on to record eight points and add four rebounds to her final totals. Jaida Young recorded her fourth double-digit scoring effort of the season, posting 10 points alongside seven rebounds, three assists, and a block to help push Dakota Wesleyan to a 26-10 lead after the first period.

The second period saw DWU keep a similar scoring pace. While CSM was able to connect on a few more scoring opportunities, the Tigers maintained control by doubling the Flames’ rebounding total, 48-24, by the end of the game, alongside an astounding 35 points recorded off turnovers, outnumbering the four recorded by the College of Saint Mary. Emma Yost rounded out the starting lineup with eight points, three rebounds, and an assist as the Tigers took a 52-25 lead into the break at halftime.

Dakota Wesleyan’s lead allowed for more involvement from the bench, as Avery Orth recorded 14 total points in just 19 minutes played, going 5-11 (45.5%) from the field, while recording five boards, four assists, and a block in the paint. Her presence helped open up other members of the bench to score, including Maleighya Estes, who posted eight total points and seven rebounds. The added efforts propelled the Tigers to a 30-point third period while limiting the Flames to just 10 points scored.

The fourth period saw even more players come off the bench to record minutes, including Lizzie Pavlis, who ended up leading the team in rebounds with eight in total, while also recording five points and two steals. Isabelle Ellwein added three points to the scoreboard in her 15 contributed minutes. The Tigers were able to extend the final score to 90-42 by the end of the contest, recording their 11th consecutive victory, along with a successful season sweep of the Flames.

DWU Women’s Basketball will be back in action at the Corn Palace on Wednesday, January 28th, starting at 6:00 PM for the annual Pink the Palace matchup. DWU will also be celebrating Faculty & Staff Appreciation Night.
