MINNESOTA TWINS
— The Minnesota Twins used three solo home runs from Brooks Lee, Royce Lewis and Ryan Jeffers to pick up a 5-3 win at Seattle on Friday night. Luke Keaschall gave the Twins a 4-3 lead in the seventh inning with an RBI double that scored Alan Roden from first. Minnesota’s bullpen was excellent again, throwing four shutout innings, allowing no hits with two walks. With the win, the Twins improve to 56-55 on the season and are tied with Cleveland for the final American League Wild Card spot. Game two of the three game series in Seattle is Saturday at 3:10 pm on FS1.
— The Minnesota Twins acquired right-handed pitcher Dean Kremer from the Baltimore Orioles on Friday night in exchange for minor league outfielder Jhomnardo Reyes. THE 30-year-old Kremer has a 6.50 ERA in seven starts this season. The seventh-year right-hander has gone 42-44 with a career 4.37 ERA in 133 games, all with the Orioles. Kremer went 11-10 with a 4.19 ERA while striking out 142 batters over 171 innings last season. He also dealt with a quad injury that sidelined him from mid-April until July.
COLLEGE
— A federal judge has dealt the NCAA a major setback by ruling that Division I athletes from the high school class of 2022 who used up four seasons of eligibility are allowed to compete for a fifth season this fall. The decision temporarily blocks the NCAA’s new eligibility rule, which was set to begin with athletes enrolling in 2027. The ruling could create roster challenges across college sports, while the NCAA says the decision highlights the need for Congress to pass legislation protecting its eligibility rules.
— A bipartisan college sports bill received a major boost Friday after the SEC and Big Ten agreed to support the Protect College Sports Act. The compromise would allow schools to directly pay athletes up to $48 million annually by combining the current $21 million revenue-sharing cap with an additional $27 million for player retention. The bill also includes stricter rules on third-party NIL deals. The legislation still faces hurdles in the Senate and House, but supporters hope it can advance before Congress begins its summer recess next week.

— FIFA President Gianni Infantino has dropped plans to sell a stake in World Cup profits to private equity after widespread opposition from across global soccer. UEFA, CONCACAF and the Asian Football Confederation all rejected the proposal, with UEFA even threatening to boycott FIFA competitions. The plan called for creating a $20 billion company to manage World Cup commercial rights with outside investors. Infantino said the proposal had become too divisive and would not move forward.

— CBS Sports has placed lead NFL analyst Tony Romo on leave following his arrest in Wisconsin on suspicion of operating a vehicle while under the influence. Romo was arrested July 23 after deputies said he failed field sobriety tests, and authorities reported finding an open alcohol container in his vehicle. He is scheduled to appear in court Sept. 21. CBS announced that J.J. Watt will replace Romo on its top NFL broadcast team alongside Jim Nantz and Tracy Wolfson until further notice.

— New York has sued prediction market platform Kalshi, calling it an illegal gambling operation and seeking an estimated $36 billion in penalties, restitution and forfeited profits. State officials argue Kalshi is offering unlicensed sports betting and violating New York gambling laws, while the company says it is federally regulated and that states lack authority to oversee its business. The lawsuit is part of a growing legal battle between states and prediction market companies over who has regulatory authority.

— Cameron Young fired a bogey-free, course record-tying 9-under 61 Friday to grab a share of the second-round lead at the Rocket Classic in Detroit. Young sits at 10 under alongside Patrick Cantlay and Patrick Fishburn heading into the weekend. Rickie Fowler is two shots back after a 68.

— The San Francisco Giants are suspending pay to injured outfielder Harrison Bader after he aggravated his left foot injury in a scooter accident last weekend. The team is investigating the incident and will stop payments until Bader is able to return to performing services for the club. Bader, who signed a two-year, $20.5 million contract before the season, has been sidelined since May with plantar fasciitis and was expected to receive about $1.4 million for the remainder of the season.
— Miguel Vargas, Andrew Benintendi, Munetaka Murakami and Colson Montgomery homered as the Chicago White Sox beat the American League-leading Tampa Bay Rays 6-1.
— Will Warren allowed four hits in 6 2/3 shutout innings, while Amed Rosario and rookie Spencer Jones each homered as the New York Yankees defeated the Chicago Cubs 2-0.
— Yainer Diaz homered and tied a career high with four hits, while Isaac Paredes and Christian Walker also went deep to lead the Houston Astros to an 11-2 rout of the Texas Rangers that put them in first place in the AL West. Jeremy Peña had three RBIs and Yordan Alvarez added two as the Astros tied a season high with 18 hits for their ninth win in 10 games to move a half-game ahead of Texas atop the division.
— Geraldo Perdomo and Gabriel Moreno had back-to-back RBI singles off in a four-run eighth inning, lifting the Arizona Diamondbacks to a 4-1 victory over the Cleveland Guardians. Arizona is a National League best 13-5 since July 9.
— Tomoyuki Sugano allowed one run over 6 2/3 innings to win for the seventh time in his last eight starts as the Colorado Rockies beat the Kansas City Royals 3-1 after a hailstorm delayed the start an hour.
