MITCHELL KERNELS
— Mitchell Kernels girls basketball fell to 1-3 on the season after a 60-52 loss to Lyman on Monday as part of the Hoop City Classic at the Corn Palace. Lyman led wire-to-wire, with sophomore Jordyn Scott scoring a game-high 27 points, hitting five 3-pointers. Addie Siemsen led the Kernels with 25 points, but the Kernels shot just 5-of-26 from three. Lyman improves to 3-0. Mitchell is back in action on Wednesday to take on Sisseton during the third and final day of the Hoop City Classic at Noon.
— Mitchell Kernels boys basketball takes on Jonesboro (Ga.) on Tuesday at 7 pm as part of the Hoop City Classic.
— Mitchell Kernels wrestling hosts Aberdeen Central for a dual on Tuesday with the girls competing at 1:30 pm, followed by the boys at 2:30 pm.
— Mitchell Kernels gymnastics hosts the four Sioux Falls public schools and Watertown for a meet on Saturday at 11:30 am.
— Mitchell Marlins boys hockey returns to the ice on Friday when they host Brandon Valley.

DAKOTA WESLEYAN
— Dakota Wesleyan men’s basketball finished non-conference play with a 97-58 win at Bismarck State on Monday night. The Tigers set a season-high for points, hitting 12 three-pointers and scoring 50 points in the first half. Senior Anthony Riggans led the way with a career-high 21 points, while Tyson Stevenson added 19. Randy Rosenquist Jr. and Steele Morgan chipped in 15 points each. Dakota Wesleyan improves to 7-8 overall as they prepare to return to conference play on Saturday at Midland at 3:45 pm.
— No. 10 Dakota Wesleyan women’s basketball, 9-4 on the season, hosts Northwestern on Tuesday at 5 pm at the Corn Palace as part of the Hoop City Classic.
SOUTH DAKOTA STATE
— South Dakota State men’s basketball ended its non-conference schedule with a 99-71 loss at No. 1 Arizona on Monday night in Tucson. Kalen Garry led SDSU with 20 points, while Jaden Jackson added 18. Arizona had six players score in double figures, led by Koa Peat’s 19 points and 14 rebounds, as Arizona improved to 13–0. The Jackrabbits drop to 7–8 and open Summit League play on Thursday at home against Omaha at 4:15 pm.
— South Dakota State women’s basketball, 10-4 on the season, starts Summit League play vs. St. Thomas on Thursday, Jan. 1 at 2 pm.
— No. 8 South Dakota State wrestling faces Arizona State on Friday, Jan. 2 at 6 pm at the Pentagon in Sioux Falls.

— USD women’s basketball hosts the College of St. Mary (Neb.) on Tuesday at 2 pm before starting Summit League play on Jan. 3 at Kansas City.
— USD men’s basketball, 8-7 on the season, opens Summit League play on Wednesday at North Dakota State at 4 pm.

— Zane Gonzalez kicked a 51-yard field goal with 21 seconds remaining as the Atlanta Falcons recovered after blowing two 21-point leads to upset the Los Angeles Rams 27-24. Bijan Robinson’s 93-yard touchdown run was the longest in Atlanta history, while Jessie Bates III scored on a 34-yard interception return. The Falcons led 21-0 at halftime. Matthew Stafford recovered from throwing three interceptions to help the Rams pull even a 24-24. Stafford’s 11-yard touchdown pass to Puka Nacua tied the game with 2:46 remaining. Robinson rushed for 195 yards and set the Falcons record for most scrimmage yards in a season.
— Baltimore Ravens head coach John Harbaugh says he’ll have a better sense on Wednesday about quarterback Lamar Jackson’s status for Sunday night’s game at Pittsburgh that will decide the AFC North title. Tyler Huntley helped Baltimore keep its playoff hopes alive, replacing an injured Jackson for last weekend’s win at Green Bay. But Harbaugh said Monday if Jackson is ready, he’ll play Sunday. Jackson has been nursing a back injury from two weekends ago against New England. The Green Bay game was the fourth game he’s missed this season.
— Kansas City Chiefs coach Andy Reid says he plans to return next season, dismissing any retirement rumors. The 67-year-old Reid addressed his future on Monday as Kansas City is 6-10 and out of playoff contention. Reid signed a five-year extension in April 2024. He spent 14 seasons with the Eagles before joining the Chiefs. Reid has 307 wins, needing 18 more to pass George Halas for third on the NFL’s all-time list.
COLLEGE FOOTBALL
— USC head football coach Lincoln Riley emphatically stated that Notre Dame is responsible for the pause in the near 100-year rivalry with the Trojans. Riley assigned blame Monday in San Antonio as No. 16 USC prepares to take on TCU in the Alamo Bowl. A joint press conference with TCU head coach Sonny Dykes was the first time Riley had a chance to speak about the discontinuation of the series. In place of USC, Notre Dame announced a home-and-home series with BYU for 2026 and 2027.
NASCAR
— Officials say the father of NASCAR driver Denny Hamlin died and his mother was critically injured after a weekend fire heavily damaged the North Carolina home where they lived. Gaston County officials said Monday that firefighters arrived Sunday night at a two-story home near Stanley that was mostly engulfed in fire, with flames showing through the attic. Officials say 75-year-old Dennis Hamlin and 69-year-old Mary Lou Hamlin were found outside the home suffering from catastrophic injuries. Officials say Dennis Hamlin later died from his injuries at a hospital and Mary Lou Hamlin was being treated at a burn center.

— Naz Reid scored a season-high 33 points off the bench as the Minnesota Timberwolves routed the Bulls 136-101 after Chicago lost top scorers Coby White and Josh Giddey to injuries. Nikola Vucevic led Chicago with 23 points. The Timberwolves committed just three turnovers in the win to improve to 21-12 on the season.
— Jarrett Allen had 27 points and 10 rebounds as the Cleveland Cavaliers held on to beat Victor Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs 113-101. Wembanyama had 26 points and 14 rebounds for his 10th double-double of the season for the Spurs, who have lost two straight after winning eight consecutive games.
— Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored 39 points as the Oklahoma City Thunder beat the Atlanta Hawks 140-129. Chet Holmgren had 24 points, nine rebounds and three blocks, and Jalen Williams added 20 points, nine rebounds and seven assists for the Thunder. Gilgeous-Alexander made 15 of 24 field goals and scored at least 20 points for the 104th consecutive game.
— Jalen Brunson had a 28-point and 10-assist to lead the New York Knicks over the New Orleans Pelicans 130-125. Zion Williamson scored a season-high 32 points for the Pelicans, who lost their fourth straight.
— Kevin Durant scored 30 points to lead the Houston Rockets to a 126-119 win over the Indiana Pacers. It’s the ninth consecutive loss for the Pacers, who have the NBA’s worst record at 6-27.
— Steph Curry scored 27 points as the Golden State Warriors beat the Brooklyn Nets 120-107.
— Bobby Portis shot 8 of 12 from the field and scored 25 points off the bench, while Giannis Antetokounmpo added 24 points and seven assists as the Milwaukee Bucks defeated the Charlotte Hornets 123-113. Brandon Miller had 31 points and eight rebounds for Charlotte.
— Dillon Brooks scored 26 points as the Phoenix Suns won their fourth game in a row, 115-101 over the Washington Wizards.
— Jamal Shead scored 19 points and Brandon Ingram added 17 as the Toronto Raptors overcame a 21-point, second-quarter deficit to beat the Orlando Magic 107-106.
