MITCHELL KERNELS
— Mitchell Kernels volleyball will be at No. 3 Brandon Valley on Tuesday at 7 pm. Mitchell is 15-6 on the season and currently seventh in Class AA seed points with two matches remaining in the regular season.
— In his lone season of high school football, Mitchell senior linebacker Colton Smith made a lasting impression. Smith was named to the 2025 Eastern South Dakota Conference (ESD) Class AA All-Conference Team after a dominant two-way campaign for the Kernels. Smith anchored the Mitchell defense with a team-leading 43 tackles, along with four interceptions, six-and-a-half tackles for loss, two-and-a-half sacks, and four blocked kicks. His knack for making big plays extended to the scoreboard as well as Smith tied for the team lead with 24 points, returning three of his interceptions for touchdowns. On offense, Smith contributed as a tight end, hauling in nine receptions for 196 yards and a touchdown. Smith’s all-conference recognition caps a memorable senior season and solidifies his place among the ESD’s top defenders in 2025.
DAKOTA WESLEYAN
— Dakota Wesleyan women’s soccer is the No. 6 seed in the GPAC Tournament. They will be at No. 3 Hastings on Tuesday at 7 pm for the quarterfinals.
— Dakota Wesleyan women’s basketball opens the season on Tuesday vs. Bismarck State at the Corn Palace at 6 pm.
— Dakota Wesleyan men’s basketball hosts Bismarck State on Tuesday at the Corn Palace at 8 pm.
— Dakota Wesleyan volleyball ends the regular season at Briar Cliff on Tuesday at 7:30 pm.
— Dakota Wesleyan football hosts Midland on Saturday at 1 pm.
SOUTH DAKOTA STATE
— South Dakota State women’s basketball season started on Monday night with a 78-62 win at Creighton and a career night for Brooklyn Meyer. Meyer finished with 33 points, eight rebounds, five assists and five blocks. Katie Vasecka added 18 points, while transfer Maggie Hartwig had eight points and 12 rebounds. The Jackrabbits host Rice on Friday at 7 pm.
— South Dakota State men’s basketball picked up a 75-66 season opening win on Monday over Merrimack at the Pentagon. Jaden Jackson was 5-of-8 from three to lead SDSU with 23 points, while Matthew Mors added 16 points and nine rebounds. The Jacks host Dakota State on Thursday at 7 pm.
— South Dakota State’s Rod DeHaven was named the Summit League Cross Country Men’s Coach of the Year on Monday. This marks the 16th season DeHaven has been awarded Cross Country Coach of the Year. DeHaven earns this honor after coaching the men’s team to 10-straight conference titles this past weekend, 14 in total.
— South Dakota State volleyball will be at North Dakota State on Thursday at 7 pm.
— South Dakota State women’s soccer will travel to Tulsa on Thursday to face No. 2 seed Denver at 1 pm. No. 1 Oral Roberts faces No. 5 Kansas City at 7:30 pm.
— South Dakota State football, 7-2 on the season, will be at USD next Saturday at 3 pm on ESPNU.
SOUTH DAKOTA
— USD men’s basketball lost to Utah Tech in overtime 81-79 on Monday night. USD will be at Creighton on Wednesday at 7 pm. Issac Bruns led the Coyotes with 23 points on 8-of-24 shooting.
— USD women’s basketball defeated York (Neb.) 104-33. The Coyotes had a 30-2 to lead at the end of the first quarter and 51-8 at halftime. USD hosts Air Force on Friday at 11 am.
— USD volleyball hosts Omaha on Thursday at 6 pm. The Coyotes are 16-8 overall on the season and 8-4 in the Summit League.
— USD football hosts SDSU on Saturday at 3 pm at the DakotaDome.
NFL
— Jacoby Brissett threw for two touchdowns and ran for a score filling in for Kyler Murray as the Arizona Cardinals ended a five-game losing streak with a 27-17 win over the Dallas Cowboys. Brissett made his third consecutive start after the week began with expectations of Murray returning from a foot injury coming off the team’s bye week.
NBA
— Julius Randle had 19 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists for his 15th career triple-double as the Minnesota Timberwolves beat the winless Brooklyn Nets 125-109. Donte DiVincenzo scored 25 points, Jaden McDaniels finished with 22 and Rudy Gobert added 15 points and 12 rebounds for the Timberwolves.
— Giannis Antetokounmpo made a 17-foot buzzer-beating jumper to give the Milwaukee Bucks a 117-115 victory over the Indiana Pacers. Antetokounmpo had 33 points, 13 rebounds and five assists and shot 14 of 21 from the field.
— Karl-Anthony Towns scored a season-high 33 points and grabbed 13 rebounds, leading the New York Knicks to a 119-102 victory over the Washington Wizards.
— Deandre Ayton had 29 points and 10 rebounds against his former team, leading the short-handed Lakers to a 123-115 win over the Portland Trail Blazers. Rui Hachimura added 28 points for the Lakers, who were missing both Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves.
— Nikola Jokic scored a season-high 34 points and 14 assists as the Denver Nuggets never trailed in a 130-124 victory over the Sacramento Kings.
— Jusuf Nurkic dropped in a putback with 0.6 seconds remaining as the Utah Jazz overcame a double-digit, second-half deficit to beat the Boston Celtics 105-103. Keyonte George scored a season-high 31 points for Utah, while Jaylen Brown had 36 points for Boston, but was 0-for-9 from three.
— Ban Adebayo had 25 points and 10 rebounds as the Miami Heat defeated the Los Angeles Clippers 120-119. James Harden scored 29 points and Kawhi Leonard added 27 as the Los Angeles Clippers lost at home for the first time in four games this season.
— Amen Thompson scored a season-high 27 points, while Alperen Sengun added 26 points and 11 rebounds as the Houston Rockets defeated the Dallas Mavericks for a 110-102 victory.
COLLEGE BASKETBALL
— Freshman Koa Peat scored 30 points to lead No. 13 Arizona to a 93-87 win over third-ranked and defending national champion Florida in the Hall of Fame Series on Monday night in Las Vegas.
MLB
— The Atlanta Braves have hired Walt Weiss as their manager to succeed Brian Snitker. Weiss has been the Braves’ bench coach since 2018 and was on Snitker’s staff when they won the World Series in 2021. This is Weiss’ second major league managing job after four seasons with the Colorado Rockies from 2013-16. Weiss finished his playing career as a shortstop with Atlanta from 1998-2000. Snitker announced in early October he would not be returning for an 11th year with the club.
— The Chicago Cubs had a major league-high three Gold Glove winners this year, with Pete Crow-Armstrong, Ian Happ and Nico Hoerner all taking home baseball’s most famous fielding honor. It was the first Gold Glove for Crow-Armstrong, part of a breakout season for the All-Star center fielder. Happ won for the fourth consecutive year in left field, and it was the second Gold Glove for Hoerner at second base. Kansas City, Boston and San Francisco each had two winners. Eight players earned the award for the first time. Bobby Witt Jr. and Maikel Garcia of the Royals became the first shortstop-third baseman teammates to win in the same season since 2013. Patrick Bailey and Logan Webb of the San Francisco Giants are the first catcher and pitcher from the same team to win a Gold Glove in the same season since 2013. Cleveland left fielder Steven Kwan become just the third player in history to win a Gold Glove in each of his first four seasons.

— The NHL announced Monday that the Dallas Stars will host the 2027 Stadium Series at the home of the NFL’s Cowboys in Arlington, Texas. The opponent for the game next season at AT&T Stadium on Feb. 20, 2027, will be announced at a later date.
