MITCHELL KERNELS
— Mitchell Kernels boys golf tied for seventh overall with SF Lincoln at the Brookings Invite on Monday with a team score of 304, finishing just seven shots behind second place Harrisburg. Individually, Asher Dannenbring finished in a three-way tie for second with a -1 (71) along with six birdies on the day. Everett Morrison finished in a tie for fifth with an E (72). The Kernels host the Mitchell Invite on Friday at 10:30 a.m. at Lakeview Golf Course.

— Mitchell Kernels girls tennis hosts Yankton and SF Lincoln for a triangular on Tuesday, starting at 10 am. The Kernels are 14-3 on the season in duals.

— Mitchell Kernels football, 1-2 on the season, host Watertown on Friday at 7 pm.

— Mitchell Kernels boys soccer host Vermillion on Tuesday at 6 pm at Joe Quintal Field.

— Mitchell Kernels girls soccer, 4-5 on the season, will be at Yankton on Thursday at 7 pm.

— Mitchell volleyball, 4-3 on the season, hosts Yankton on Thursday at 6:30 pm. The KORN pregame show starts at 6:15 pm.

DAKOTA WESLEYAN
— Allison Meyerink sits in third place after shooting back-to-back 68’s at the Northwest Iowa National Invitational Tournament in Le Mars. Meyerink is -8 through two rounds, two shots back of the leader and one shot back of second place. The Tigers are seventh out of eight teams at +31. The third and final round is on Tuesday.

— Dakota Wesleyan’s Landon Ruesink has been named the 2024-25 NAIA Male Recipient of the A. O. Duer Scholarship Award, recognizing his excellence in academics, character, and community service. A standout in both football and baseball, Ruesink maintains a 4.0 GPA in accounting and has received multiple academic and athletic honors, including All-Conference recognition and Daktronics Scholar Athlete awards.

— Dakota Wesleyan football hosts Northwestern on Saturday at 1 pm at Joe Quintal Field.

— Dakota Wesleyan women’s soccer hosts Dakota State on Tuesday at 6 pm at the Pepsi Cola Soccer Complex in Mitchell. The Tigers are 0-1-3 on the season.

— Dakota Wesleyan volleyball, 7-5 on the season, host Dordt on Wednesday at 7:30 pm at the Christen Athletic Center in Mitchell.

— Dakota Wesleyan men’s soccer host Mt. Marty on Saturday at 5 pm at the Pepsi Cola Soccer Complex.

SOUTH DAKOTA STATE
— No. 2 ranked South Dakota State hosts Mercyhurst on Satudray at 6 pm with the Jackrabbit pregame show starting at 4 pm on KORN News Radio.

— South Dakota State women’s soccer host Wyoming on Thursday at 7 pm. The Jackrabbits are 5-1-3 on the season.

— South Dakota State volleyball hosts Boise State for back-to-back matches this weekend, starting on Friday at 6 pm.

SOUTH DAKOTA
— USD football host Drake on Saturday at 1 pm.

— USD volleyball hosts the South Dakota Classic this week as they take on Villanova on Thursday at 7 pm, Wichita State on Friday and Drake on Saturday.

— USD women’s soccer host Wyoming on Sunday at 1 pm. The Coyotes are 4-2-3 on the season.

MINNESOTA TWINS
— Simeon Woods Richardson struck out a career-high 11 over six innings and Austin Martin drove in four runs to lead the Minnesota Twins over the New York Yankees 7-0. New York dropped five games back of Toronto in the AL East. The Yankees’ lead for the top AL wild card was cut to one game over Boston. Game two of the three-game series is tonight at 6:40 pm.

NFL
— Minnesota Vikings quarterback J.J. McCarthy will miss the next game with a sprained ankle, according to head coach Kevin O’Connell. McCarthy didn’t miss any game time during Minnesota’s 22-6 loss to Atlanta. He passed an initial medical evaluation and got his foot taped for extra support after the injury occurred late in the third quarter. The ankle pain worsened overnight. Carson Wentz, who joined the Vikings two weeks ago, will start against this Sunday vs. the Bengals.

— Cincinnati Bengals head coach Zac Taylor has confirmed that quarterback Joe Burrow will have surgery on his injured left toe. Taylor didn’t have a timeline Monday for when Burrow will have surgery or how long the franchise quarterback might be out. The turf toe injury is expected to sideline Burrow a minimum of three months. It is Burrow’s third major injury in his six seasons since being the top overall pick in the 2020 draft.

— Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels is dealing with a knee injury, and his status for the team’s next game is up in the air. The Commanders host the Raiders on Sunday. Daniels had an MRI on his knee and is considered day to day. Daniels was hurt in Washington’s 27-18 loss at Green Bay on Thursday night.

— Tom Brady plans to play alongside current and former NFL stars in a three-team flag football tournament in Saudi Arabia next year. The seven-time Super Bowl-winning quarterback and Fox Sports analyst made the announcement Monday. The Fanatics Flag Football Classic on March 21 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, will also include Saquon Barkley, CeeDee Lamb, Christian McCaffrey, Maxx Crosby and Rob Gronkowski, among others. The Raiders Pete Carroll, Denver’s Sean Payton and San Francisco’s Kyle Shanahan will be the coaches.

MLB
— J.T. Realmuto drove in the go-ahead run on a sacrifice fly in the 10th inning, capping a 6-5 comeback victory by the Philadelphia Phillies over the Los Angeles Dodgers that clinched the NL East title in the series opener between division leaders. Andy Pages homered off Phillies closer Jhoan Duran in the ninth to tie it 5-5. Kyle Schwarber hit his 53rd HR of the season in the first inning.

— Geraldo Perdomo went 3 for 3 with a double, a triple and two RBIs, as the surging Arizona Diamondbacks beat the San Francisco Giants 8-1. Arizona, which has won three straight and 12 of 18, moved just 1 ½ games behind the New York Mets for the last National League wild card.

— Tyler Stephenson hit a bases-clearing double in the ninth inning as the Cincinnati Reds beat the St. Louis Cardinals 11-6 to close within two games of the Mets for the last NL wild card spot. Cincinnati scored eight runs in the final three innings and ended a three-game losing streak, getting back to .500 at 75-75.

— Houston’s Zach Cole homered and drove in three runs after replacing injured slugger Yordan Alvarez in the lineup, as the Astros beat the Texas Rangers 6-3. Houston pulled within a half-game of the Seattle Mariners atop the AL West and moved three games ahead of Cleveland and Texas for the final American League wild card.

— Trey Yesavage struck out nine to set a Toronto record for a major league debut, while George Springer hit a tiebreaking single in the 11th inning as the Blue Jays beat the Tampa Bay Rays 2-1 to open a five-game AL East lead behind their fifth straight win. Yesavage, a 22-year-old right-hander taken 20th overall in last year’s draft, allowed one run, three hits and two walks in five innings.

— The Cubs Jameson Taillon allowed two hits in six innings, while Michael Busch and Pete Crow-Armstrong homered as Chicago beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 4-0 to get closer to clinching a postseason berth. The Cubs opened a four-game lead over San Diego for the top NL wild card and trails NL Central-leading Milwaukee by five games with 12 games remaining.

— Matt Olson went 4 for 5 with a three-run homer and Spencer Strider allowed only one run in seven innings as the Atlanta Braves beat the Washington Nationals 11-3. Olson homered in his third straight game.

— Colton Cowser hit a three-run home run as the Baltimore Orioles beat the White Sox 4-1 to extend Chicago’s losing streak to four games.
