MITCHELL KERNELS
— Mitchell Kernels girls tennis finished in second place on Tuesday at the ESD conference meet in Yankton over two days with 275 team points. Harrisburg won the team title with 312 points. Mitchell’s Elliot Smith won Flight 5 singles, while Ava Prunty won Flight 6 singles. Matteah Graves placed second in Flight 2, while Mia Larson also had a runner-up finish at Flight 4 singles. In doubles, Megan Mastel and Matteah Graves finished second in Flight 1, while Elliot Smith and Ava Prunty also were runners-up at Flight 3. Mitchell now competes at the Class AA state tournament in Sioux Falls on Thursday, October 9 and Friday, October 10.

— Mitchell Kernels volleyball lost 3-1 (23-25, 25-11, 25-11, 25-22) on Tuesday night at Sioux Falls Lincoln to fall to 6-4 on the season. Audrey Miller led Mitchell with nine kills with just one hitting error. Addie Siemsen finished with 23 assists, which leaves her four assists shy of 1,000 for her career. Kenzie Hetland added seven total blocks, and London Hajek had 12 digs. Mitchell will be at SF Roosevelt on Thursday at 7 pm.

— Mitchell Kernels girls soccer lost its fifth match in a row on Tuesday, 2-1 at Aberdeen Central. Mitchell ends the regular season at West Central on Thursday at 3:30 pm. The Kernels have a 4-9 record.

— Mitchell Kernels boys soccer had its winless streak reach six straight matches on Tuesday with a 6-1 at Aberdeen Central. Mitchell ends the regular season vs. James Valley Christian on Thursday at 5:30 pm. The Kernels have a 2-8-3 record.

— Mitchell Kernels football will be at Aberdeen Central this Friday night at 7 pm. Both teams are 1-4 on the season. Aberdeen Central is currently seventh in seed points, while the Kernels are 10th.

— Mitchell Kernels boys golf competes at the Class AA state tournament next week at Meadowbrook Golf Course in Rapid City on Monday and Tuesday. The Kernels finished seventh at the ESD conference meet on Monday in Brandon.

DAKOTA WESLEYAN
— Dakota Wesleyan women’s soccer, 1-2-5 on the season, will be at Northwestern on Wednesday at 7:30 pm.

— Dakota Wesleyan men’s soccer, 4-5-1 on the season, will be at Northwestern on Wednesday at 5 pm.

— Dakota Wesleyan volleyball, (9-7 overall, 3-3 GPAC), hosts the College of St. Mary on Friday at 7:30 pm. The Tigers are in a four-way tie for fourth place in the GPAC with a 3-3 conference record.

— Dakota Wesleyan football is at Doane on Saturday at 1 pm. The Tigers, 1-4 on the season, are looking for their first conference win of the season with an 0-4 GPAC record. DWU has been outscored 137-36 in four GPAC games.

— Dakota Wesleyan women’s golf competes at the Mustang Derby at Whispering Creek Golf Club in Sioux City starting on Monday.

SOUTH DAKOTA STATE
— South Dakota State’s Mia Bosch was named the Summit League Women’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week for her performance against St. Thomas last Thursday. Bosch recorded a goal and an assist to help lead the Jackrabbits to a 6-0 win over St. Thomas in their Summit League opener.

— South Dakota State volleyball will be at Denver on Thursday. The Jackrabbits are 7-3 overall on the season and 1-0 in the Summit League.

— South Dakota State women’s soccer host North Dakota on Thursday at 7 pm. SDSU’s unbeaten streak is at nine straight matches as the Jackrabbits have a 7-1-3 record and 1-0 in the Summit League.

— South Dakota State football starts Missouri Valley Conference play on Saturday with a road game at Youngstown State at 5 pm. The Jackrabbits are ranked No. 2 in the latest FCS media poll with a 4-0 record.

SOUTH DAKOTA
— For the fourth time in the first five weeks of the season, USD’s Kamryn Farris was named the Summit League Defensive Player of the Week. Farris averaged 5.2 digs per set in the opening week of Summit League action. She had 37 digs in seven sets and hit the 20-dig mark for the sixth time this season with 22 at North Dakota this past Thursday. Ferris is the only player in the conference averaging over 4.0 digs per set. Farris ranks No. 11 in the NCAA in digs per set and No. 13 in total digs.

— USD football hosts Murray State on Saturday for homecoming at 2 pm.

— USD volleyball (9-5 overall, 1-1 Summit League) will be at Denver on Saturday at 2 pm.

— USD women’s soccer hosts North Dakota State on Thursday at 6 pm.

— Boston’s Garrett Crochet retired 17 consecutive batters, while pinch-hitter Masataka Yoshida lined a two-run single that sent the Red Sox past the New York Yankees 3-1 in their AL Wild Card Series opener. New York loaded the bases with nobody out in the ninth inning, but All-Star closer Aroldis Chapman worked out of the jam against his former team. Boston is 10-4 versus the Yankees this year.

— Detroit ace Tarik Skubal tied a franchise postseason record with 14 strikeouts, leading the Tigers to a 2-1 win at Cleveland. Skubal allowed just one run on three hits over 7 2/3 innings. Detroit’s Zach McKinstry had a sacrifice bunt to score Riley Green from third to break a 1-1 tie in the seventh inning for the eventually game-winning run.

— Seiya Suzuki and Carson Kelly hit back-to-back homers, helping the Chicago Cubs beat the San Diego Padres 3-1 in Game 1 of their NL Wild Card Series. Chicago also got 4 2/3 perfect innings from its bullpen in the franchise’s first playoff win since 2017.

— Shohei Ohtani hit two home runs for the Los Angeles Dodgers in Game 1 of their NL Wild Card Series against the Cincinnati Reds in a 10-5 win. Ohtani’s first homer was a leadoff shot in the first inning. His second, a two-run drive in the sixth, extended the lead to 8-0. Blake Snell threw seven innings, allowing two runs on four hits, before the Dodgers bullpen would give up three more runs over the seventh and eight inning.

NFL
— Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill will not need another surgery after undergoing a major procedure Tuesday to repair his dislocated left knee and multiple torn ligaments, including his ACL. Hill will miss the remainder of the 2025 season and should be ready for 2026. There was no nerve damage, no blood flow issues or no broken bones. Hill suffered the season-ending injury during the team’s 27-21 win Monday night over the New York Jets and was taken to a local hospital for further evaluation.

WNBA
Las Vegas Aces 107, Indiana Fever 98 (OT) – Las Vegas advances to the WNBA Finals to take on the Phoenix Mercury with Game 1 on Friday night at 7 pm on ESPN. A’Ja Wilson finished with 35 points and eight rebounds, while Jackie Young had 32 points and 10 assists.
