MITCHELL KERNELS
— Class AA No. 1 Harrisburg swept Mitchell on Tuesday 25-18, 25-9, 25-18 to win its 82nd straight match. Harrisburg’s Gabi Zachariasen had 19 kills, 11 digs and four aces, while Josalyn Samuels had 31 assists. For Mitchell, Addie Siemsen had 12 assists, Nia Talley had six kills, while Audrey Miller and Charleigh Collins had three blocks apiece. Mitchell, 4-3 on the season, host Yankton on Thursday, Sept. 18 at 6:30 pm. The KORN pregame show starts at 6:15 pm.

— Mitchell Kernels girls soccer, 4-5 on the season, lost at Watertown on Tuesday 4-3. The Kernels will be at Yankton next Thursday, Sept. 18 at 7 pm.

— Mitchell Kernels boys soccer lost at Watertown on Tuesday 4-1. The Kernels host Vermillion on Tuesday at 6 pm at Joe Quintal Field.

— Mitchell Kernels girls tennis will be at SF Washington on Thursday for a dual at 4 pm.

— Mitchell Kernels boys golf competes at the Yankton Invitational on Friday at 10 am at Fox Run Golf Course.

DAKOTA WESLEYAN
— Dakota Wesleyan’s Lukas Adamhuber has been named the GPAC’s Men’s Soccer Player of the Week following his two-goal performance against Providence (Mont.) in a 5-0 win last week.

— Dakota Wesleyan volleyball, 7-4 on the season, will be at Northwestern on Wednesday at 7:30 pm.

— Dakota Wesleyan men’s soccer host the South Dakota School of Mines on Friday at 5 pm.

— Dakota Wesleyan women’s soccer will be at Nebraska Wesleyan on Wednesday at 8 pm.

— Dakota Wesleyan football will be at Concordia on Saturday at 6 pm.

SOUTH DAKOTA STATE
— South Dakota State men’s golf team finished runner-up at the Wildcat Invitational on Tuesday hosted by Kansas State as four Jackrabbits placed in the top-16 on the individual leaderboard. SDSU went 3-under on the final round, the best of all teams, to move into runner-up position. The Jacks finished with a +6, five shots behind winner Kansas State. The Jackrabbits are off until the Husker Invitational, September 22-23 in Lincoln, Nebraska.

— South Dakota State distance runner Cody Larson was named the Summit League Men’s Cross Country Performer of the Week on Tuesday afternoon. Larson won the Augustana Twilight college men’s four-mile race in 18 minutes on Friday night. Next week, the Jackrabbits will travel to Falcon Heights, Minn., to compete against top competition at the Roy Griak on Friday, Sept. 19.

— South Dakota State junior goalkeeper Mallorie Benhart earned her second set of conference awards for the 2025 season on Tuesday, being named the Summit League Defensive Performer of the Week. Benhart made six saves in the Jackrabbits’ 1-1 draw against Oregon State on Sunday.  She’s made 15 total saves and allowed three goals on the season.

— South Dakota State volleyball, 3-1 on the season, travels to Minneapolis this week for the Diet Coke Class hosted by the University of Minnesota. The Jacks face No. 24 Dayton on Friday, South Florida on Saturday and No. 11 Minnesota on Sunday.

— South Dakota State women’s soccer, 3-1-3 on the season, will be at Drake in Des Moines, Iowa, on Wednesday at 6 pm.

— No. 2 South Dakota State hosts Drake on Saturday at 6 pm. The Jackrabbit pregame show starts at 4 pm on KORN News Radio.

SOUTH DAKOTA
— USD volleyball swept this week’s Summit League Performer of the Week awards after standout performances by Kamryn Farris and Lauren Medeck last week in Connecticut. Kamryn Farris earned Defensive Performer of the Week for the second straight week, tallying 56 digs and five aces. She leads the Summit League in digs and aces. Lauren Medeck was named Offensive Performer of the Week with 51 kills, a .314 hitting percentage, and 4.6 kills per set. She had double-doubles in all three matches, including hitting over .500 in final sets against UConn and Ball State.

— USD volleyball will host the Coyote Invitational this week facing Green Bay on Thursday, Florida Gulf Coast on Friday and Kansas on Saturday.

— USD women’s soccer, 4-1-2 on the season, host Northern Colorado on Thursday at 6 pm.

— USD football, 0-2 on the season, will be at home for the first time this season when they host Northern Colorado on Saturday at 1 pm.

MINNESOTA TWINS
— Kyle Hendricks threw seven shutout innings, while Chris Taylor and Yoán Moncada hit three-run homers as the Los Angeles Angels scored all of their runs with two outs in a 12-2 win over the Minnesota Twins. Hendricks (7-9) gave up four hits, struck out six and walked one in his best start of the season, throwing 58 of 80 pitches for strikes. Right-hander Zabby Matthews took the loss, giving up five runs and seven hits in 4 ⅔ innings. The Angels had 17 hits and went 8 for 17 with runners in scoring position. Leadoff man Mike Trout and Moncada each scored three runs. Twins infielder Ryan Fitzgerald, who threw a scoreless eighth inning, broke up the shutout with a two-run homer in the ninth. The final game of the three-game series is this afternoon at 3 pm. The Twins host Arizona for a three-game home series starting on Friday.

NFL
— Jalen Carter’s penalty for spitting on Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott sends a message to the rest of the league. Carter is losing $57,000 for the infraction, the equivalent of his game check for Week 1 because the NFL considers the punishment a one-game suspension with time served. The Pro Bowl defensive tackle didn’t play a snap after he was ejected from Philadelphia’s 24-20 victory over Dallas on Thursday. Carter is expected to be on the field when the Eagles face the Kansas City Chiefs in a Super Bowl rematch on Sunday.

MLB
— Tampa Bay Rays shortstop Wander Franco has been detained by police and admitted to a mental health clinic in the Dominican Republic. Authorities said on Tuesday his family requested the move, and it is not linked to any legal issues. Earlier this year, Franco was found guilty of sexually abusing a minor and received a two-year suspended sentence. Last weekend, he reported $16,000 stolen from a resort, but his attorney later claimed the money was found. Franco disagreed, insisting it had been stolen.

NHL
— The NHL’s new collective bargaining agreement establishes an emergency health care and wellness fund for alumni. It’s the first time the sport has had such a source for retired players. Officials from the league, union and alumni association shared details Tuesday about the plan that allocates $4 million annually to assist with physical and mental health concerns. The plan provides access to a family doctor and a mental wellness professional for anyone who played even one game in the NHL.

MLB
— Tyler Heineman drove in the winning run in the 10th inning as the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Houston Astros 4-3. Toronto trailed 3-1 heading to the bottom of the ninth.

— Kyle Schwarber hit his 50th home run of the season and Ranger Suárez struck out a career-high 12 over six shutout innings to lead the Philadelphia Phillies to a 9-3 win over the New York Mets. The Phillies have won the first two games of the four-game series and lead the NL East by nine games over the Mets.

— Joey Cantillo allowed four hits in a career-best eight-plus innings, while José Ramírez homered, doubled and scored twice as the Cleveland Guardians beat the Kansas City Royals 2-0 for their fifth straight victory.

— Parker Meadows hit a go-ahead single to spark a nine-run seventh inning and Kerry Carpenter added a two-run triple as the Detroit Tigers defeated the Yankees 12-2. Aaron Judge hit his 359th career homer in the first, passing Yogi Berra for fifth place in Yankees history.

— Connelly Early struck out 11 to tie the Red Sox record for a major league debut as Boston beat the Athletics 6-0. He matched a 1977 team record with 11 strikeouts.

— Teoscar Hernández hit two home runs and Emmet Sheehan pitched seven innings to lead the Los Angeles Dodgers past the Colorado Rockies 7-2. Freddie Freeman and Mookie Betts also went deep for the Dodgers, who increased their lead in the NL West to two games over San Diego.

— Tyler Stephenson hit a two-run homer with two outs in the ninth as the Cincinnati Reds beat the San Diego Padres 4-2.

— Randy Arozarena hit a go-ahead, three-run home run in the third inning as part of a four-RBI night as the Seattle Mariners beat the St. Louis Cardinals 5-3 to close within one game of the AL West lead and the Houston Astros.

— Michael Helman hit a two-run home run during a four-run fifth inning, just minutes after making a catch that prevented a two-run homer as the Texas Rangers beat the Milwaukee Brewers 5-4.

— Willy Adames hit a three-run homer in the first inning as the San Francisco Giants beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 5-3 to gain ground in the NL wild card race. San Francisco pulled within two games of the Mets for the final NL wild card spot, but the Mets own the tiebreaker.

— Tristan Gray, Josh Lowe and Richie Palacios homered to help the Tampa Bay Rays beat the Chicago White Sox 5-4. Tampa Bay returned to .500 with its 11th win in 16 games. It had dropped three in a row since a seven-game win streak.

— Rookie Cade Horton threw 6 1/3 innings, while Pete Crow-Armstrong drove in two runs as the Chicago Cubs defeated the Atlanta Braves 6-1. Horton, a leading candidate for National League Rookie of the Year, allowed one run on four hits with no walks. His 2.70 ERA leads all rookies and 10 wins lead National League rookies.

— Samuel Basallo hit an RBI single in the 11th inning that was initially ruled a foul ball to give the Baltimore Orioles a 3-2 walk-off win over the Pittsburgh Pirates.

— Josh Bell homered for the fourth time in three games and Mitchell Parker threw 7 2/3 innings of two-run ball as the Washington Nationals beat the Miami Marlins 7-5.
