MITCHELL KERNELS
— Mitchell Kernels girls tennis split a home dual on Tuesday defeating Yankton 5-4, while losing to SF Lincoln 7-2. Mitchell, now 16-5 in duals on the season, will be at Vermillion on Monday.
— Mitchell Kernels boys soccer lost to Vermillion on Tuesday 5-3 at Joe Quintal Field. Senior Sam Mullenmeister scored all three goals for Mitchell as they fell to 2-6-1 on the season. The Kernels will be at Yankton on Thursday at 5 pm.
— Mitchell volleyball, 4-3 on the season, hosts Yankton on Thursday at 6:30 pm. The KORN pregame show starts at 6:15 pm.
— Mitchell Kernels girls soccer, 4-5 on the season, will be at Yankton on Thursday at 7 pm.
— Mitchell Kernels boys golf host the Mitchell Invite on Friday at 10:30 a.m. at Lakeview Golf Course.
— Mitchell Kernels football, 1-2 on the season, host Watertown on Friday at 7 pm.
DAKOTA WESLEYAN
— Dakota Wesleyan’s Allison Meyerink finished in a tie for second at -9 over three rounds at the Northwest Iowa National Invitational in Le Mars on Tuesday. Meyerink shot a -1 (71) during her third round to finish three shots behind first place. As a team, the Tigers shot +55 to finish seventh out of eight teams. DWU will be at the Mt. Marty Invite starting on Monday.
— Dakota Wesleyan football hosts Northwestern on Saturday at 1 pm at Joe Quintal Field.
— Dakota Wesleyan women’s soccer hosts Dakota State on Tuesday at 6 pm at the Pepsi Cola Soccer Complex in Mitchell. The Tigers are 0-1-3 on the season.
— Dakota Wesleyan volleyball, 7-5 on the season, host Dordt on Wednesday at 7:30 pm at the Christen Athletic Center in Mitchell.
— Dakota Wesleyan men’s soccer host Mt. Marty on Saturday at 5 pm at the Pepsi Cola Soccer Complex.
SOUTH DAKOTA STATE
— South Dakota State and Arizona State will square off in a wrestling dual at the Sanford Pentagon on Friday, January 2, 2026. Tickets will go on sale at a later date. Arizona State boast a storied history with 13 individual national champions and the 1988 NCAA team national championship. The Jackrabbits are entering their 8th season under head coach Damion Hahn. At least four individual SDSU wrestlers have qualified for the NCAA Tournament in each of the last five years, including a record nine individual’s last season.
— No. 2 ranked South Dakota State hosts Mercyhurst on Satudray at 6 pm with the Jackrabbit pregame show starting at 4 pm on KORN News Radio.
— South Dakota State women’s soccer host Wyoming on Thursday at 7 pm. The Jackrabbits are 5-1-3 on the season.
— South Dakota State volleyball hosts Boise State for back-to-back matches this weekend, starting on Friday at 6 pm.
SOUTH DAKOTA
— USD RB L.J. Phillips Jr. was named the Missouri Valley Football Conference Offensive Player of the Week after running for 301 yards on Saturday vs. Drake. Phillips was also named the National Player of the Week. He became just the second Coyote in school history to have 300-yard rushing game and the first in the Division I era. He also became the first Missouri Valley Football Conference rusher to have 300 yards in a game since 2012.
— For a third straight week, the Summit League’s Defensive Player of the Week in volleyball went to USD’s Kamryn Farris. It’s Farris’ sixth weekly award of her career. Farris had 58 digs over the weekend with a 5.2 digs per set average. She matched her season-high of 25 digs for the third time in the five-set win over Florida Gulf Coast on Friday night.
— USD football host Drake on Saturday at 1 pm.
— USD volleyball hosts the South Dakota Classic this week as they face Villanova on Thursday at 7 pm, Wichita State on Friday and Drake on Saturday.
— USD women’s soccer host Wyoming on Sunday at 1 pm. The Coyotes are 4-2-3 on the season.
MINNESOTA TWINS
— Yankees closer David Bednar held on to get the final three outs as New York beat the Minnesota Twins 10-9 after nearly wasting a nine-run lead. Trent Grisham hit a three-run homer in the second innings as every Yankees starter had a hit. New York built a 10-1 lead before Minnesota’s Trevor Larnach hit a solo HR in the bottom of the ninth to cut the lead down to one. The final game of the three-game series is tonight at 6:40 pm from Target Field.
NFL
— The Minnesota Vikings signed quarterback Desmond Ridder to add depth following a high ankle injury to J.J. McCarthy, who is expected to miss 2–4 weeks. Carson Wentz will start in the meantime, and it’s unclear if Ridder or rookie Max Brosmer will serve as the backup. The Vikings also placed running back Aaron Jones on injured reserve due to a hamstring injury, sidelining him for at least four games. Jordan Mason will take over the bulk of carries. The team signed RB Cam Akers to the practice squad, who has played for the Vikings the last two seasons.
MEDIA
— A new poll finds sports fans are likelier to use a combination of streaming services and traditional TV options to access their favorite teams. The poll shows this complicated and often expensive patchwork is common for many sports fans and leaves them beholden to multiple platforms and subscriptions if they want to keep up with their teams. About 4 in 10 people who follow sports “extremely” or “very” closely use both cable and satellite TV and a sports streaming platform. That’s compared with about 2 in 10 people who follow sports “somewhat” closely.
MLB
— Houston slugger Yordan Alvarez has a “pretty significant” ankle sprain that is going to keep him out indefinitely, manager Joe Espada said Tuesday. Alvarez was injured when he turned his left ankle at home plate after scoring in the first inning on Monday night vs. Texas.
— The Rays likely will start a new search for a ballpark site in the Tampa and St. Petersburg area after the team is sold, according to baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred. Owner Stu Sternberg has been negotiating to sell the Rays to a group headed by Patrick Zalupski. The Rays have had several ballpark deals fall through in recent years. Tampa Bay’s home since its inception in 1998 has been Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg. The Rays are playing home games this year at Steinbrenner Field in Tampa, the spring training home of the Yankees, while their home stadium is being repaired following damage caused last year by Hurricane Milton.
WNBA
— Dallas Wings star Paige Bueckers was a runaway choice for WNBA Rookie of the Year after one of the best debut seasons in league history. Bueckers received 70 of the 72 votes from sports writers and broadcasters announced by the league on Tuesday. Bueckers was a bright spot on a team that tied Chicago for a league-worst 10-34 record after being drafted with the No. 1 overall pick. The former UConn star averaged 19 points, 3.9 rebounds, 5.4 assists and 1.6 steals. Her 692 points and 194 assists were the third most by a WNBA rookie.
MLB
— Cal Raleigh hit a pair of homers to match the Seattle season record set by Ken Griffey Jr., while rookie Dominic Canzone hit a career-high three home runs as the Mariners routed the Kansas City Royals 12-5 for their 10th consecutive win. Raleigh’s first homer gave him 55 on the season, breaking the record for a switch-hitter set by Yankees great Mickey Mantle in 1961. Raleigh’s second HR tied the team record that Griffey set during the 1997 season and matched the following year.
— After Shohei Ohtani pitched five hitless innings for the Dodgers, the Philadelphia Phillies’ Rafael Marchon hit a tiebreaking, three-run homer with two outs in the ninth inning for a 9-6 win. Brandon Marsh had a two-run homer and Max Kepler added a solo shot in a six-run sixth for Philadelphia. Ohtani’s 50th homer leading off the eighth helped the Dodgers tie the game 6-6 before losing in the ninth.
— Arizona’s Jordan Lawlar’s infield single with the bases loaded scored Corbin Carroll with the winning run in the ninth inning as the Diamondbacks erased an early four-run deficit by beating the San Francisco Giants 6-5. Both teams are chasing the New York Mets for the final National League wild card. Arizona remained 1 ½ games back with their fourth straight win. The Giants fell three games behind New York.
— Jeremy Peña went 3 for 3 with a walk and scored twice as the Houston Astros held on for a 6-5 win over the Texas Rangers. Houston remained ½ game behind Seattle for first place in the AL West.
— Steven Kwan, Angel Martinez, José Ramírez and Kyle Manzardo combined to give Cleveland four extra-base hits in an extra inning for the first time in 64 years as the Guardians beat the Detroit Tigers 7-5 in the 10th inning for their 10th win in 11 games. Cleveland extended a winning streak to five for the fifth time this season, matching its season high, and improved to 11-6 in extra innings, the most extra-inning wins in the big leagues.
— Brett Baty hit a two-run homer that capped a five-run first inning for the New York Mets, who beat the San Diego Padres 8-3. Francisco Lindor, Pete Alonso and Cedric Mullins also went deep as the Mets improved to 4-9 this month.
— Freddy Peralta allowed two hits, struck out 10 and won his NL-leading 17th game, while Christian Yelich hit his 29th homer and drove in three runs as the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Los Angeles Angels 9-2.
— Michael McGreevy pitched seven shutout innings as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Cincinnati Reds 3-0. It was another costly defeat for Cincinnati, which has lost four of five and dropped three games behind the New York Mets for the last National League wild card.
— Michael Busch hit the fourth leadoff home run of his career as the Chicago Cubs moved to the brink of their first playoff berth in five years with a 4-1 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Cubs, winners of six of their past seven, brought their magic number down to one.
— Toronto’s Nathan Lukes was involved in home-run video reviews at the plate and in right field as the Blue Jays beat the Tampa Bay Rays 6-5 for their sixth straight win. Toronto, seeking its first AL East title since 2015, maintained a five-game lead over the second-place Yankees.
— Brett Harris had a go-ahead single in a two-run sixth inning as the Athletics beat the Boston Red Sox 2-1 for their first five-game winning streak in over a year. The Red Sox have lost four of five.
— Matt Olson homered for a fourth consecutive game as the Atlanta Braves beat the Washington Nationals 6-3 in the first game of a doubleheader. Chris Sale struck out nine while allowing three hits over eight innings, while Matt Olson hit a bases-loaded triple in the 10th to lead Atlanta over Washington 5-0 on for a doubleheader sweep.
— Dylan Beavers tripled, homered and drove in three runs, while Gunnar Henderson and Coby Mayo had three hits apiece as the Baltimore Orioles beat the Chicago White Sox 8-7.
— Eury Pérez pitched five scoreless innings as Miami beat the Colorado Rockies 6-5 for the Marlins’ fifth win in their last six games.
