Flandreau 5, Dimock-Emery 1
MITCHELL, S.D. – The Flandreau Cardinals advanced to Sunday’s championship game with a 5-1 win over Dimock-Emery in the first semifinal on Saturday night at Cadwell Park.
Flandreau (16-10) would score two runs in the third inning and two more in the fourth. It was the bottom of the order that did the damage for the Cardinals as seventh place hitter Bret Severtson and eighth place hitter Drew Demers had back-to-back doubles in the third and back-to-back singles in the fourth to spark the offense.
Dimock-Emery (14-11) would threatening in the fifth inning with the bases loaded and one out before Phil Johnson grounded into an inning ending double play. Johnson would finish 0-for-4 in the cleanup spot.
The Raptors would score their only run in the seventh when Luke Bamberg hit a two-out double down the right field line to score Sam Pischke from second.
Jason Schmidt went all nine innings for Dimock-Emery, allowing five runs on 11 hits with six strikeouts.
Drew Weber got the win for Flandreau, throwing 7 1/3 innings, allowing just one run on six hits.
Severtson would come from right field to record the final five outs on 15 pitches.
Flandreau, winners of seven straight, advances to the state championship game where they will play the Dell Rapids Mudcats at 2:30 pm Sunday.
Thursday, August 12
MITCHELL, S.D. – The Alexandria Angels shot at a third consecutive state championship came to an end Thursday night with a 5-3 loss vs. Flandreau.
Flandreau (15-10) never trailed in the game, scoring two runs in the top of the first inning. The Angels would tie the game a 2-2 in the bottom of the third on an Aaron Groenweg grounder to short scoring Tyson Gau, followed by a Flandreau error in CF off the bat of Adam Durfee, scoring Jordan Gau.
The Cardinals would go ahead for good with a three run, fifth inning, capped off by a Jed Schmidt hit-by-pitch, followed by a wild pitch that would score Flandreau’s leadoff man Jacob Patterson from third.
Schmidt went five innings for Alexandria, giving up five runs with only one of them being earned, with six strikeouts. Ethan Davis threw the final four innings for the Angels, shutting out Flandreau, allowing just three hits and no runs.
Alexandria would score it’s final run in the bottom of the eighth inning on a wild pitch from Bret Severtson, scoring Cole Wenande from third to make it 5-3.
Severtson was the third pitcher of the night for Flandreau and their most effective giving up one run and four hits over 4 1/3 innings. Dallas Schneiderman would pitch the 9th to close it out for the Cardinals allowing just one walk.
Alexandria ends with season with a 17-3 record.
Flandreau now advances to Saturday’s first semifinal where they will take on Dimock-Emery (14-10), winners of six in a row. The Cardinals last reached the championship back in 2018 when they lost to Canova, 10-2.
MITCHELL, S.D. – Dimock-Emery’s postseason magic continued on Thursday night with a 7-3 win over the 20-1 Plankinton Bankers to advance to Saturday’s semifinal in the Class B Amateur Baseball State Tournament.
The Raptors (14-10) have now won six games in a row sweeping through the District 5B Tournament with wins over state tournament teams Mt. Vernon, Alexandria and Winner/Colome along with three straight wins in this year’s state tournament.
Phil Johnson threw all nine innings for Dimock-Emery after throwing a complete game vs. Milbank on Sunday night. Johnson allowed three runs on eight hits to go along with seven strikeouts and also went 2-for-5 at the plate with two RBI’s.
Both sides would score a run in the 1st inning before the Raptors would break the 1-1 tie with a pair of two out, run scoring singles in the 5th from Drew Kitchens and Luke Bamberg.
Kitchens would go 3-for-5 from the leadoff spot with two runs and two RBI’s. Bamberg, a pickup player from Corsica-Stickney, went 2-for-5 in the second spot in the lineup with a run and two RBI’s.
Plankinton (20-2) would get a run back in the bottom of the 6th on a two out single from Trevor Salmonson to cut the lead to one.
A Phil Johnson single in the top of the 7th would put Dimock-Emery back up 4-2 before the Bankers Josh Engquist would answer with a two out double to make it 4-3 heading into the 8th inning.
Dimock-Emery would put the game away in the 8th with three runs and a couple of more run scoring plate appearances from the top of the order of Kitchens and Bamberg.
Plankinton starter Travis Gant would get knocked out with one out in the 8th inning. Gant threw 7 1/3 innings, giving up seven runs on 13 hits.
Dimock-Emery will play Flandreau on Saturday night at 5:30 pm with the winner advancing to Sunday’s championship.
Tuesday, August 11
Alexandria 16, Volga 1 – 8 innings
MITCHELL, S.D. – The Alexandria Angels make quick work of Volga on Monday night with a 16-1, 8 inning victory to advance to Thursday night’s quarterfinal where they will take on the Flandreau Cardinals.
The Angels scored in each of the first four innings to build a 8-1 lead. Alexandria would put up eight runs in the top of the 8th to end the game early. They would bring 12 batters up in the 8th and score those eight runs on six hits.
Cole Wenande led the hit parade with a 4-for-5 night, scoring four times with three RBI’s and a pair of triples. Jarred Zens and Peyton Smith also had three hits apiece. Jordan Gau had a game-high four RBI’s, driving in a pair of runs in the 4th to put the Angels up 8-1.
Tyson Gau went seven of the eight innings for the Angels, giving up just one run and seven hits to go along with eight strikeouts. Ethan Davis would pitch a scoreless 8th inning in relief.
Alexandria would knock Volga starter Trevor Olson out in the 4th inning. Olson gave up seven of the Angels 16 runs in just 3 1/3 innings.
The Angels are now just three wins away from their fifth title in the past six seasons. They play Flandreau at 8 pm on Thursday night with the winner advancing to the semifinals on Saturday at 5:30 pm
Monday, August 10
MITCHELL, S.D. – After putting up 20 hits in its first round win vs. Akron, Iowa, the Mt. Vernon Mustangs could only manage three hits and were 10-run ruled on Monday night losing to Flandreau, 11-0 in seven innings in second round action.
Seven of the nine hitters in the Flandreau lineup had at least two hits, including Grant Hieb who finished 4-for-5 with a double and two runs scored and a RBI.
After taking an early 3-0 lead after two innings, the Cardinals put the game away with a five-run 4th inning in which 10 batters would come to the plate.
Mt. Vernon (14-8) starter Briggs Havlik would get knocked out in the 4th inning and ended up surrendering six runs over 3 1/3 innings. Deric Denning would come in, in relief and allowed five runs and 10 hits in three innings.
Dallas Schneiderman was efficient for Flandreau, completing seven shutouts innings with just 74 pitches with five strikeouts.
The Cardinals would add three more runs in the top of the 7th to make it 11-0. The game was called in the bottom half when the Mustangs failed to score.
Flandreau (14-10) moves on to Thursday’s quarterfinal vs. Alexandria.
Sunday, August 9
Dimock-Emery 5, Milbank 4
Plankinton 13, Menno 3 – 7 innings
MITCHELL, S.D. – Dimock-Emery and Plankinton will square off in Thursday’s first quarterfinal after wins on Sunday night in the second round of the Amateur Baseball State Tournament.
Dimock-Emery made an early lead hold up as they held off Milbank, 5-4. The Raptors put up three runs in the bottom of the 1st inning. The first two runs coming on a Phil Johnson RBI single. Johnson would go 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI’s, along with a complete game on the mound giving up four runs, one earned, with seven strikeouts, eight hits on 99 pitches.
Dimock-Emery (13-10) would add two more runs in the 3rd and 4th innings to take a 5-1 lead, but Milbank would mound a comeback with a pair of two out hits to make it 5-3 in the 6th inning.
The Firechiefs would make things interesting in the 9th when Dom Boerger drove in Lance Frognor from third on a ball that ricocheted off of Johnson’s right hand on the mound. Johnson would shake off the one hopper off his pitching hand to get Milbank SS Jacob Jackson for the final out on one pitch.
In the final game of the night, Plankinton would take advantage of some extra outs and some poor defense by Menno to 10-run rule the Mad Frogs in a 13-3, in seven innings.
Menno SS Tyler Miller would commit the first two of his four errors in the 1st inning. The Bankers would scored five times in the first on just one hit and Menno would never threaten the rest of the way.
Preston Kristensen and Trevor Salmonson both ended up with three hits while combining for five RBI’s for the Bankers and Cole Knippling had a pair of doubles to lead the Plankinton offense.
The Bankers would score five more runs in the 5th inning to take a 12-0 lead. The game was finally called after the 7th inning when it was 13-3.
Ryland DeVries, a pickup player from the Plankinton Gold Sox, threw all seven innings for the Bankers, allowing three unearned runs on six hits with eight strikeouts.
Plankinton and Dimock-Emery will now face off in the first quarterfinal game at 5:30 pm on Thursday night with the winner advancing to Saturday night’s semifinal.

MITCHELL, S.D. – A rematch of last year’s state championship game had the same results as Alexandria and Jed Schmidt shutout the Canova Gang 2-0 in the much anticipated first round matchup early on Friday at Cadwell Park.
Schmidt allowed just four hits and a walk while striking out seven hitters as the Angels ace beat Canova in the state tournament for the second straight year after defeating the Gang in the 2020 state title game, 11-3.
An Aaron Groenweg double scored Jordan Gau from first to get Alexandria on the board in the 2nd inning. The Angels would add an insurance run in the 8th with a Groenweg home run to left. Groenweg, a pickup player from Corsica/Stickney, would go 2-for-3 with at 2B, HR, walk, run and RBI.
Tery Krier pitched well for Canova, giving up just the two runs over eight innings along with eight hits and three strikeouts.
Kendall Gassman had two of the four hits for Canova, who ends the season with a 20-4 record and will not reach at least the semifinals for the first time since 2017.
Alexandria (16-3) will play Volga on Monday night at 8 pm, after the Cormorants defeated Crofton, Neb., 3-2 on Friday afternoon.
Thursday, August 5
Menno 10, Redfield DQ 8
Plankinton Bankers 10, Clark 8 – 11 innings
MITCHELL, S.D. – A two-run home run from Chris Hill in the bottom of the 11th inning capped of a six-run comeback for the Plankinton Bankers as they defeat Clark, 10-8 on a hot and humid Thursday afternoon at Cadwell Park.
Hill’s HR’s was his third hit of the game as he took the first pitch he saw from Clark’s Zach Toben deep to right field off the Cadwell Park scoreboard.
The Bankers (19-1) trailed 7-1 going into the bottom of the 5th inning after starter Josh Engquist was pulled after just 3 2/3 innings. Engquist’s curveball was as sharp as usual and he gave up seven runs on seven hits on 78 pitches.
Travis Gant would come in from from second base and pitch the final 7 1/3 innings to shut down the Trader offense and pick up the victory. Gant gave up just one unearned run and six hits to go along with six strikeouts.
The Plankinton comeback would start in the 5th with a three-run HR from 1B Cole Knippling to make it 7-5. The Bankers would get within one in the 6th with a Travis Gant single to center, scoring Engquist from second.
Clark would add a run in the top of the 8th when Grayson Florey hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score Rhett Florey from third to make it 8-6.
Plankinton would answer in the bottom half of the 8th to tie the game at eight on a two-run, two out double from Hill.
Clark had plenty of chances to put the game away as they left 14 runners on base, including leaving the bases loaded in the 3rd and 4th innings, despite also scoring five runs combined in the 3rd and 4th.
The Bankers will now play Menno at 8 p.m. on Sunday night in second round action. Menno advanced with a 10-8 win over Redfield Dairy Queen earlier in the afternoon.
MITCHELL, S.D. – All nine Mt. Vernon starters had at least one hit and eight of the nine had an RBI in the Mustangs 13-5, first round win over the Akron Rebels Thursday night at Cadwell Park.
The teams combined for 13 runs in the first three innings. Cameron Deinert blew the game open with a three-run home run to left in the 3rd inning to give Mt. Vernon a 7-3 lead.
Three more runs in the 5th inning put the game away as the Mustangs increase their lead to 12-4.
Koby Larson and Bradley Dean both went 4-for-6 with three runs scored. Dean tripled in the second, doubled in the third and had a pair of singles in in the fifth and the eighth.
Mt. Vernon also ran all over Akron going 5-for-7 in steals.
Luke Tiesler would pick up the win, going 7 1/3 innings in relief of Deric Denning with two outs in the 2nd inning. Tiesler gave up two runs on four hits, while striking out eight on 98 pitches.
Dylan Kirkeby got the loss for Akron, going just 1 2/3 innings and giving up four runs.
Blake Faber led the way for the Akron offense out of the leadoff spot with three of the Rebels seven hits with two runs.
The Mustangs (14-7) will play the winner of South Central and Flandreau in the 2nd round on Monday night.
Wednesday, August 4
Milbank 8, Platte 4
Dimock-Emery 4, Castlewood 3
MITCHELL, S.D. – A Doug Sudbeck two-out single scoring Sam Michels from 2nd base in the bottom of the 8th inning ended up being the game winner for Dimock-Emery as the Raptors defeated Castlewood last night, 4-3 on the opening night of the 2021 Class B Amateur Baseball Tournament.
Sudbeck (2-for-4 with 3 RBI’s) also drove in the first two runs of the game for Dimock-Emery (12-10) in the 4th inning on a two-out single, scoring Phil Johnson and Carter Dye.
Castlewood would score of all three of its runs in the top of the 5th inning. Dimock-Emery would end up tying the game at three in the bottom of the 5th on a Kellan Benck balk.
Benck threw all eight innings for Castlewood, giving up four runs, but just one earned with zero K’s and seven hits.
Jason Schmidt cruised through most of the night for Dimock-Emery, striking out 11 batters over nine innings and giving up three unearned runs and 128 pitches.
The Raptors move on to Sunday night’s second round where they will take on the Milbank Firechiefs.
Milbank would score five runs in the bottom of the 1st inning and that would be enough to end the Platte Killer Tomatoes season, 8-4.
Grant Lang had 15 strikeouts for Platte, but ended up giving up eight runs in eight innings on 154 pitches.
Platte would chip away at the Milbank lead with two runs in the 5th and two more runs in the 6th inning to get within two at 6-4. Milbank would get a run back in the bottom of the 6th and add one more insurance run in the bottom of the 8th.
Dom Burger came in, in relief of Milbank starter Justin Larson to throw 3 1/3 shutout innings. Larson gave up four runs, two earned, in 5 2/3 innings to get the win.
