Ft. Pierre City Council votes to close the parking lot at the Casey Tibbs South Dakota Rodeo Center due to hill slide concerns

The Fort Pierre City Council recently met in special session to discuss safety concerns surrounding the slipping hillside below the Casey Tibbs South Dakota Rodeo Center.  Specifically, the gravel parking area between Fort Volunteer and the historic railroad depot.  Assistant Public Works Director Jess Powell says there’s growing concern a slide could inundate the parking area.

Mayor Greg Kenzy told the Council the railroad museum is good with closing early for the year.

Council member John Duffy questioned the idea of closing the lot. “ Whatever goes on in town, there’s a lot more parking and traffic in there because it’s really convenient for tourists,” said Duffy.

The Council voted to close the lot indefinitely.
