Weber’s walk-off lifts Mitchell to sweep of Huron in doubleheader

MITCHELL, S.D. — Mitchell swept Huron in a doubleheader Thursday at Drake Field, winning 5-1 in Game 1 and 2-1 in walk-off fashion in Game 2.

In the opener, Mitchell struck early with a two-run first inning and never trailed. Stratton Forst delivered a run producing single to shallow right field, while Ian Weber added two hits from the No. 9 spot to help spark the offense.

Carter McCormick was dominant on the mound, allowing one hit over five scoreless innings while striking out eight and walking two. Mitchell’s defense backed him with a clean game, committing no errors.

Mitchell added three unearned runs in the fifth inning to pull away. Huron’s lone run came on an RBI hit by Chase Schuchhardt in the top of the sixth.

In Game 2, the teams were locked in a pitcher’s duel before Mitchell pulled out a 2-1 win in the bottom of the seventh. With the game tied 1-1, Weber delivered the decisive blow, ripping a double to score the winning run.

Huron took a 1-0 lead in the third on a groundout by Parker Bischoff, but Mitchell answered in the fourth when Forst singled in the tying run.

Kaiden Allen led Mitchell on the mound, allowing one unearned run on four hits over six innings with two strikeouts. Nolan Stahly worked into the seventh for Huron, allowing two runs (one earned) in a hard-luck loss.

Weber finished Game 2 with two hits and an RBI, while Forst also drove in a run for Mitchell.

Mitchell, 7-1 on the season, travels to Yankton on Sunday for a 2 pm doubleheader.
