Dakota Wesleyan Women’s Basketball Falls to Mount Marty, Winning Steak Ends at 15

YANKTON, S.D. — Dakota Wesleyan Women’s Basketball traveled south to take on its GPAC rivals in the Mount Marty Lancers.

Mount Marty was ready to go from tipoff, but the Dakota Wesleyan offensive effort was able to keep pace, even with an initial Lancer advantage. DWU saw initial contributions from Maleighya Estes off the bench, alongside Emma Yost, who went on to record 15 points, three rebounds, and an assist throughout the game. Estes contributed six points overall, alongside three boards and an assist, steal, and block to round out her well-rounded effort.

The Tigers would still trail 19-14 at the end of the first period, but extra contributions from the rest of the lineup helped keep the contest close. Taliyah Hayes began her team-leading scoring effort in the second, where she recorded eight of her 18 total points, and was also able to snag three steals, along with two assists.

Avery Broughton also began her scoring contributions and went on to record a 10-point, 10-rebound double-double. Even with the added efforts, the Lancers were able to find more success from the field, outshooting the Tigers 38% to 34%, along with a 50% clip from three, outpacing DWU’s 19% conversion rate from beyond the arc. The Tigers would trail 40-32 heading into the break.

The Tigers were able to get back on schedule during the third, outscoring the Lancers 18-17 during the period off the back of continued pressure from Hayes, along with points from Rylee Rosenquist, who recorded six total points and six rebounds in her starting effort. Jaida Young and Shalayne Nagel rounded out the starting group, combining for eight points, seven boards, three assists, and two steals. The advantageous third period was not able to pull ahead of the Lancers’ lead, however, and the Tigers had to claw through the fourth to keep the score close.

They were able to convert on offensive opportunities, but the success from range, along with MMU’s 47-32 rebound advantage, ultimately led to the Lancers claiming the victory, 75-63. The Tigers fall to 21-5 on the season and 17-3 in conference play.

DWU Women’s Basketball will be back in action at home against the Dordt Defenders on Wednesday, February 18th, for Senior Day starting at 6:00 PM.
